History Of Saltwood Products

In 1957 Albert and Gertrude Salt started a company in Fayetteville, NC called Salt Wood Products, Inc.

The company started as a wood pressure treatment facility and the plant was located in Fayetteville, NC.

In 1959 the plant was moved from Fayetteville to Cove City, NC for purposes of gaining more business from the nearby Marine base, Camp Lejune. The U.S Marines were expanding and construction new facilities at Camp Lejune.

Salt Wood Products, Inc. introduced a new product to Eastern North Carolina commonly known as “salt treated lumber”. The “salt treatment” was not invented by Albert Salt but was used as a generic term in other parts of the country to differentiate the lumber treated with it from creosote treated lumber. “Salt treated lumber” was a water soluble chemical that was forced into the wood through a combined process of vacuum and pressure, hence the term “pressure treated lumber”. (or salt treated lumber)

The treating facility was located on the property of National Milling Co. which produced wood flooring and had no connection to Salt Wood Products. Salt Wood products remained on that property until 1977 when it moved to a new facility that was once an elementary school. The school was sold at auction to Mr. Guy Warmack and Albert Salt in 1971 after consolidation in the county made the school unnecessary as a teaching facility. Salt Wood Products, Inc purchased the property from Mr. Warmack in 1977.

Salt Wood Products, Inc. occupied the property and operated as a wood treatment facility until 1988. The facility and property were sold to Cox Wood Preserving from Orangeburg, SC. As of 2014 the facility is still owned and operated by Cox Industries from Orangeburg, SC. Albert Salt and hi wife Gertrude were both from New York, NY. Albert left New York in 1939 to attend The University of Georgia and received a bachelors’ degree in forestry. He also was an
ROTC student and volunteered for the U.S. Army to fight in WWII. He was assigned to the 2nd Cavalry and served under General George S. Patton in the European Theater. He was awarded the bronze star and returned home as a captain. He attended Yale University, under the “Gl Bill” to obtain a Masters degree in forestry. Albert and Gertrude Salt were married in 1947.

After working in the wood preserving industry for several years the Salt Family moved to Fayetteville, NC. From Chicago, IL. Mr. Salt took a job acting as manager of a newly installed pressure treating facility in Fayetteville, NC in 1954. In 1957 he and Gertrude decided to start
their own business. The business was not successful in Fayetteville, hence the move to Cove City in 1959. The Salts resided in Cove City and had two children, Gary Salt and Alger Salt.

Both sons attended elementary school in Cove City and were raised in Cove City. After attending high school Alger Salt attended East Carolina University in 1973 and obtained a masters degree in chemistry and has worked in the pharmaceutical industry since that time. After attending high school Gary Salt joined the U.S. Army in 1967. Gary served as a military bandsman at Fort Bragg, NC and Vietnam with the 1st Division and the 25th Division. Gary was awarded two Army Commendation medals and a bronze star for his service in Vietnam. After serving in the army he graduated East Carolina University with a bachelors degree in accounting in 1975. After a brief period with J.C. Penny Co. Gary came to work for Salt Wood Products, Inc.
on a full time basis in 1976.

In 1980 Gertrude Salt tragically passed away. Albert and Gary were left to run the company. In 1982 Albert decided to step down as president and Gary took over as president. Albert Salt suddenly and unexpectedly passed away in 1984. Gary Salt ran the company until 1988. After selling the assets in Cove City Gary opened a
facility in Kinston, NC later in 1988 to manufacture storage buildings and other wood products along with retailing such products and other products to the public. In 1989 Gary opened a facility in Greenville, NC as a hardware store, lumber yard and retail outlet for the products
manufactured in Kinston, NC.

Salt Wood Products still operates as a single location business in Greenville, NC as of 2014.
